Hello lovely readers! It’s nice to be with you again. I am feeling more caught up after a whirlwind weekend in Chicago in early June to attend the James Beard Media Awards ceremony. Although I didn’t win for my personal essay, it was an honor to be nominated and so thrilling to be in a roomful of creative, passionate people, from filmmakers to investigative journalists, cookbook authors to podcast hosts. I discovered several must-watch movies, including the award-winning The Whole Animal by the team who made the SOMM movies and Love, Charlie: The Rise and Fall of Chef Charlie Trotter, as well as my new favorite podcast Good Food, hosted by Evan Kleiman on KCRW in Los Angeles. The bonus was getting to stay at my aunt and uncle’s house in the Chicago suburbs and to spend time with my uncle and cousin in between their costume prep and attending the Taylor Swift concert. Now, on to today’s essay!
